Oregon Transportation Commission approves establishment of a program to make available $4 million in new CMAQ funding for CNG infrastructure projects

September 19, 2013, Ashland, Oregon

At its monthly meeting, the Oregon Transportation Commission approved establishing a new program to make available $4 million in new CMAQ funding for CNG infrastructure projects. Rogue Valley Clean Cities Coalition Board Chair Michael Montero was invited to participate in the staff briefing to the Commission regarding Southern Oregon's pioneering leadership in alternative fuel initiatives, including earning the 2013 Environmental Excellence Award from Federal Highway Administration for the West Coast Electric Highway.

Rogue Valley Transportation District has been powering half of its bus fleet with clean-burning CNG for more than 15 years. Rogue Disposal and Recycling recently purchased two CNG waste trucks, with two additional units on order and plans to convert the entire fleet to compressed natural gas.

The Commission asked an array of questions regarding infrastructure challenges as well as the potential addition of RNG distribution from this same site. Rogue Valley Clean Cities Coalition supported RVTD’s application to the State of Oregon under the ConnectOregon program for funding to upgrade its fueling facility at 3200 Crater Lake Avenue, Medford. Rogue Valley Clean Cities Coalition sponsored the grand opening of the remodeled CNG station at RVTD, the only public compressed natural gas fueling station in Oregon. Jackson County, Rogue Waste Systems, City of Medford and other agencies use the RVTD station for fueling the region's growing CNG fleet.

The CMAQ announcement is welcomed news to the efforts of the Rogue Valley Clean Cities Coalition along with Avista Utilities and state and local agencies trying to identify funding to provide CNG infrastructure for fleet public and private fleet use in Southern Oregon.
