Fleet Support

Rogue Valley Transportation District, Avista Utilities, Rogue Waste Systems and Jackson County are among the fleet support partners of Rogue Valley Clean Cities. Many public and private employees are driving alternative fuel vehicles, including RVTD buses running on clean-burning CNG.

CNG-Powered Buses

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has been the primary fuel source for the Rogue Valley Transportation District fleet of buses since 2004. CNG is natural gas (comprised primarily of methane) compressed to a pressure around 3,000 pounds per square inch and stored in special, high-pressure containers. RVTD's alternative fuel fleet has improved air quality in Southern Oregon by displacing 100,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

Converting methane to natural gas

Rogue Disposal and Recycling is exploring the possibility of converting landfill gas (methane) to natural gas to provide a local, stable fuel supply for public and private fleets. Rogue Disposal and Jackson County received a CMAQ grant for a conversion analysis. The grant was announced at the June 29, 2011 fleet conference sponsored by Rogue Valley Clean Cities Coalition. Below is a powerpoint presentation about the project:

Clean-burning garbage trucks

Rogue Disposal & Recycling Inc. has retrofitted the exhaust system of 20 waste collection trucks to reduce particulate emissions by 50 percent. The particulate traps use high heat to burn off diesel engine emissions. The filters reduce the amount of particulates, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in the diesel exhaust. Ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel, available since October 2006, is required to operate vehicles equipped with partial filters. Rogue Disposal received a grant for the retrofit from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) program. DEQ awarded Rogue Disposal with the Certificate of Appreciation for Air Quality Excellence.
